“The Environment Is Not An Issue For Tomorrow, It Is An Issue  For Today” Professor Wangari Maathai, Founder Of The Green Belt Movement and a Pioneer For Environmentalism.

The implicit littering and environmental degradation brought about by capitalistic efforts to get to the top and the ever-so-humane instinct to stay afloat in economies that are not contrived for the common mwananchi let alone mere comrades it is crucial to recognize the damage that we have done and even more crucial to mediate our individual parts in this global decline.

As a Kenyan comrade, I am sure you have thrown a piece of gum on the flower beds beside the pavement leading to your Communications 101 class or have had a good part in dumping a piece of plastic where it shan’t be dropped. No? Oh yes you have and we both know it.

This piece of eco journalism is an attempt at triggering action. It implores comrades all over to recognize themselves as assets and also as change in the many avenues and spaces they exist in but most crucially in their academics and career ventures. It is an ode to the United Nations 17 SDGs on Sustainability and Development by recommending causes and regimes that work to protect and care for a planet that has nurtured and endowed us with its love and ample resources.

The green movement's core is the environment and its welfare. Political parties, organizations and persons with keen interest in environmental sustainability and the stopping of degradation champion it. To participate you need only to be intentional and conscious of how your practices, domestic and others contribute to the environment.

A plethora of questions are inevitable. You need to ask yourself how you are contributing to pollution at the household level. Is it by using plastic bags for your groceries? Is it through toxic beauty products? Could it be minimized and eventually stopped? Do your practices necessitate crucial change? etcetera.

Intentionality and being conscious though overlooked can be swift tools to herald the fight against environmental pollution and trigger desired action that is often intrinsic.

Students and comrades all over Kenya once intentional about the environment and their practices whether good or bad will finally get attuned to the global efforts and measures being put in place to preserve the planet.

Some of the movements and organizations spearheading the green movement in Kenya include the Green Belt Movement by Wangari Maathai, The Bro Who Cleans Initiative, Community Action For Nature Conservation (CANCO), Centre For Environmental Justice And Development (CEJAD), Youths For Green Action Kenya among others. Comrades can be part of these organizations by supporting their causes through voluntary work for good environmental causes. They can also start their innovative movements and ideas that contribute to the topic and be forerunners for environmental sustainability in the spaces they occupy.

By being conscious of their actions, a measly almost despicable step in combating pollution, they are congruent with the fight against environmental pollution for a sustainable future.
