Following the incentive given by the Kenya Universities And Colleges Central Placement Service KUCCPS to the 2023 KCSE candidates in regard to the first placements of students to universities and colleges in the country for different courses the portal was closed indefinitely early this March 2024 with a promise for reopening in the future for first revision

Subsequently, students who will not have been placed during the first batch of placements (First Revision) will have to apply again on the official portal, this time with less lucrative courses left since the magnum opus will already have been snatched up by students who will be placed in the first round of applications. It is indeed imperative to, in order to ensure placement, be more strategic while choosing a course at an accredited institution.

The KUCCPS APPLICATION process can be an onerous and tedious journey seeing as it is laced with fierce competition for the cream de la creams of courses on offer by different universities, colleges and other Tvet institutions in the country. In such steep terrain, it is easy to slip and consequently miss out on doing the course of your dreams at a university of your choice which by the way means revising again and again and with each revision less lucrative courses are on offer.

A strategy therefore is crucial

The following are some insights on how to secure the course of your dream as an aspiring comrade from comrades who have been through the process;

  1. Stay informed on the reopening dates for the KUCCPS STUDENTS PORTAL. Knowing when the portal reopens is helpful in the sense that it helps you organise yourself so that when it opens you can apply immediately without wasting time.- Follow the official KUCCPS social media pages and look for news on such.

  2. Familiarize yourself with the application process. This enables smooth sailing and knowing how to navigate the website and the dashboard.-Knowing the portal helps you apply more efficiently as well since you are versed with knowledge on how to apply and the instructions.

  3. Know the courses you want to do and the universities you want to do them in as well as the required cluster points.-Cluster points vary for different courses and universities. Calculating them beforehand either manually or through online calculators is helpful to determine whether you meet the required cluster mark for a particular course. Ensure that your cluster points are higher than what the university requires always and if it is a competitive course say a Law Degree at the University Of Nairobi make sure there is a substantial margin.

  4. During Application, start by giving priority to the course you want most by applying for it first (The way the system works is giving you the course you applied for first and if you do not qualify it goes to the second etcetera). It is therefore imperative that you arrange your courses in other order of most to least preferred with the most preferred course sitting on top of that list.

  5. Lastly, consider and do research on the competitiveness of courses. It is unlikely to get accepted into the University of Nairobi for a Nursing degree with low cluster points in Chemistry and biology seeing as it is a competitive course at a leading institution in Kenya therefore if you have lower cluster points you may consider other options like Maseno or Jkuat. Knowing where you can compete favourably enhances your application process immensely and guarantees placement so before going into the races ask around and make informed decisions on the courses you choose to pursue and at which institutions then you will be good to go :)

Good luck with your application endeavours. We will be uploading more on this topic so be on the lookout for more insightful blogs by following and liking our pages and articles if you find them useful.Click here to read more on KUCCPS by TheComradeBlog.
