“The Environment Is Not An Issue For Tomorrow, It Is An Issue  For Today.” Professor Wangari Maathai, Founder Of The Green Belt Movement and a Pioneer For Environmentalism

The implicit littering and environmental degradation brought about by capitalistic efforts to get to the top and the ever-so-humane instinct to stay afloat in economies that are not contrived for the common mwananchi has led us to a fast-receding natural environment. This is a crisis. A fixable one.

As of March  2024, sustainable living is no longer a heretic. It is a phenomenon gaining traction globally thanks to efforts by green movements and other pioneers of eco-friendly living which by the way is sustainable living. In retrospect, sustainability aims to reduce emissions and other types of pollution by cultivating practices at the very basic domestic level that use less natural resources.

It is as simple as buying a zero-waste pen to write for school or a recyclable makeup remover.

This piece of eco-journalism endeavors to stress the importance of sustainable living and a brighter future for not only our planet but the next generations.

Why Sustainability?

Sustainable living offers an array of advantages, it truly only has good outcomes.

Some of these include but are not limited to;

  1. Healthier living, when you take a walk to your local grocery shop or ride a bike instead of using a car you are exercising which is always good for your body.

  2. Better habits. Through sustainable living, we create and implement better lifestyles and habits. For example, eating healthier food rich in vegetables is a better habit than eating processed and low-quality meat.

  3. By leading sustainable lifestyles we create better and long-term solutions to environmental issues. A good example would be landfills for our toxic waste which are not biodegradable and in general not long-term solutions. Using biodegradable or compostable products on the other hand is a long-term solution that could lead to an impeccable environment in the future.

  4. Improved/better climate. When we switch to environmentally friendly fuels for cooking for example natural gas in place of toxic CO2 fuels will not penetrate the atmosphere and ruin the fabric of the ozone and therefore no global warming.

The environment is alive and conscious and exists in the same realm as we do. Environment preservation therefore is a core principle of sustainability and a determining factor of lifestyle and manufacturing efforts in sustainability.

How To Start?

  1. Learning about sustainability (like you are doing now :))

  2. Recognizing and observing your consumer habits and how they affect either negatively or positively your surrounding environment.

  3. Being intentional about said consumer habits by consciously going for products that do not bring harm to the environment is next. Before buying your makeup wipes at that shopping mall ask yourself how it will impact the environment. 9 times out of 10 you will put them right back and opt for eco-friendly ones.

  4. Cultivating better and eco-friendlier domestic habits. A good place to start is that kitchen sink and the tap that gushes out extremely copious amounts of water that is really not needed to wash that one mug you used to drink your morning coffee.

Where To Start?

A good place to begin your eco journey is the Ecandi Store with its affordable premium sustainable alternatives to everyday products from babies and kids, furniture, and personal care to items for your garden and plants.

Other eco-friendly shops worth exploring in Kenya include GreenThingKenya by Nely Gesare, Greenspoon, Ceramiqa Pottery Studio, Linda’s Nut Butter, Bleistere Beauty and many others.

You are bequeathed with skills and competencies to make better life choices and lead a sustainable life for the well-being of our planet by environmentalists that came before us.

You better stay green!
